Descending by weight is the order 21 CFR 101.36 requires inside a proprietary blend, so position 1 is the heaviest and position 11 the lightest.
Position is the quantitative fact this label gives away for free. Oat straw outweighs alfalfa herb, alfalfa outweighs psyllium husk, and Lactobacillus acidophilus is the lightest thing in the capsule. None of that tells a reader a milligram figure, and all of it narrows the range each ingredient can be in.
Positions four, six, seven and nine are the interesting ones. Chinese rhubarb root, aloe vera leaf, cascara sagrada bark and buckthorn bark are all anthranoid laxatives, and anthranoids are the one family on this list that works in tens of milligrams rather than grams (a review of anthranoid laxatives). They sit in the middle of the order, which is where a functional dose of them would sit.
The plant part matters as much as the plant. Aloe vera leaf is not aloe vera gel, and the difference is the latex layer between the two (NCCIH sets out the distinction). Oat straw is not oat bran, which is where every beta-glucan result in the literature comes from (a meta-analysis of oat beta-glucan).
Which SodaMelt ingredients can 250 mg realistically reach?
The label position beside the amount the published research used, row by row.
Six rows, and five of them come out the same way. Psyllium relieves constipation above 10 g a day (a 2022 meta-analysis of fibre supplementation). The alfalfa cholesterol result used 120 g of prepared seeds daily (the alfalfa seed trial). Oat beta-glucan works at 3 g (a meta-analysis of oat beta-glucan). Goldenseal has been given at roughly 3 g (NCCIH). Every one of those single doses is larger than the whole blend, and the blend is carrying eleven things at once.
The sixth row is the exception and it is why this capsule is not inert. Anthranoid glycosides are active in the tens of milligrams. A 250 mg blend with four anthranoid members near the middle of its weight order can comfortably hold a working amount of them (a survey of anthraquinones in laxative plants).
Read the two together and the picture is consistent rather than contradictory. The ingredients a buyer recognises from the front of the bottle are present at amounts no trial has tested. The ingredients a buyer may not recognise are the ones doing the work, and they are the reason the safety page is longer than it would otherwise be.
250 mg is roughly a quarter of a gram, shared by eleven ingredients. Even an even split gives each one about 23 mg. An even split is not what a formulator does, which is exactly why the order on the panel is worth reading closely.

Rhubarb root carries sennoside-type anthraquinone glycosides that pass the small intestine intact and are cleaved by colonic bacteria into the active compound (a review of anthranoid laxatives). That bacterial step is why nothing happens for hours and then does.
Its position at fourth of eleven puts it above psyllium’s neighbours in the weight order and below the two bulk plant materials at the top.
Aloe Vera
Aloe barbadensis, leaf6th of 11 by weightLeaf, not gel. The bitter yellow latex under the leaf skin carries aloin, and it is aloin rather than the inner gel that acts as a laxative (NCCIH). The National Toxicology Program fed whole-leaf extract to rats and reported intestinal tumours at the doses it used (the National Toxicology Program's rat study); the full technical report is worth reading before anyone dismisses the distinction as pedantry (the full NTP technical report).
Aloe latex was removed from the United States over-the-counter laxative monograph in 2002, which NCCIH states directly. This desk could not get the equivalent confirmation for cascara from the federal register in the same session, so that half of the story is left unwritten rather than repeated from memory.
Cascara Sagrada
Rhamnus purshiana, bark7th of 11 by weightThe bark a pharmacist would have recognised on sight fifty years ago. Cascara glycosides stimulate colonic motility in the same way the other three do, and a rat-colon assay puts its potency in the same band as senna (a rat-colon assay of senna and cascara glycosides).
One case report in the American Journal of Gastroenterology describes liver injury after cascara use (a case report of cascara sagrada liver injury). It is a case report and it is described here as one, not as a literature.
Buckthorn
Rhamnus cathartica, bark9th of 11 by weightCascara’s close relative, and the lightest of the four. Buckthorn bark carries emodin, and a toxicity assessment of the bark and its emodin content is the paper to read on it (a toxicity assessment of buckthorn bark and emodin).

Grouping them is not an editorial flourish. Four ingredients drawn from the same chemical family, all present in one capsule, add up rather than divide, and the effect a buyer notices is the sum of the four rather than any one of them.
A prospective colonoscopy study links long-running anthranoid use with melanosis coli, a harmless brown pigmentation of the colonic lining (a prospective colonoscopy study, a study of melanosis coli at colonoscopy). It reverses when the laxative stops. It is also the clearest physical evidence that these compounds reach the colon and act there, which is the point being made.

Alfalfa

The lipid work on alfalfa used 40 g of heat-prepared seeds three times a day (the alfalfa seed trial, an earlier study of alfalfa seeds), which is a food portion rather than a supplement dose. The alfalfa fact that matters at this scale is L-canavanine and the lupus-like syndrome described in the literature (the L-canavanine finding), and that belongs on the safety page.
Psyllium
Plantago ovata, husk3rd of 11 by weightThe best-evidenced ingredient on the label and the one least likely to be present at a working amount. Psyllium is a gel-forming soluble fibre; it holds water, softens stool and adds bulk, and the trials that show it doing so used more than 10 g a day for four weeks or longer (a 2022 meta-analysis of fibre supplementation, a dose-response meta-analysis). Third of eleven inside 250 mg is a fraction of one per cent of that.

Cited as chemistry, never as evidence of an effect in people.
Goldenseal

Goldenseal inhibits CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 in humans (a study of goldenseal and human cytochrome P450, the goldenseal-midazolam interaction study), which changes how the liver clears a long list of prescription drugs, and NCCIH reports metformin levels falling by about a quarter (NCCIH).
The P-glycoprotein story everyone repeats is weaker than the CYP one: a human digoxin study found no significant effect (a human digoxin study that found no effect). Anyone on a prescription should raise this capsule by name rather than as a supplement in general (a systematic review of herbal drug interactions).
Bentonite
10th of 11 by weightAn aluminium silicate clay. Pharmaceutically it is an adsorbent and a delivery excipient (a review of bentonite in drug delivery), which makes it an absorption question for anything else swallowed at the same time rather than a health claim in its own right. Lactobacillus acidophilus
11th of 11, no CFU declaredLast by weight and the only member whose useful unit is not milligrams at all. Probiotic trials count colony-forming units, and the ones with results behind them used 3 to 8 billion CFU a day (a randomised trial of probiotic sachets, a controlled study using L. acidophilus NCFM). Six differences, none of them a contradiction. The bottle is more complete everywhere the two diverge, so the bottle is what this website prints.
